Congruence uses fields of complimentary colors to map different areas of light and shadow, as well as warmth and coolness, in the planes of the face. Standing out against an equally vibrant green and purple background, and framed by a black silhouette meant to resemble hair, the intense oranges and blues of the face capture the intrinsic emotions of everyday experience. Along with a rumination on expressiveness, the abstracted forms, bold colors, and flat composition of the piece all create an allusion to Fauvism. The title, Congruence, references the overall sense of balance and agreement offered by the piece. Thus, Congruence functions as a study of the kaleidoscopic and harmonic potentials of color in portraiture.
