Drawing on the history of flower painting as a subject, from the Dutch Golden Age bouquets to Van Gogh’s sunflowers and O’Keefe’s watercolors, Interpretation imagines a modernist approach to the traditional flower arrangement still life. Inspired specifically by the forms of Milton Avery, the flowers, vase they rest in and table they are arranged on have all been reduced to a flat, yet bright and bold composition. A thin purple line traces the edges of each form—containing them while also offering an opportunity for interaction between the different colors.
